The Principality of Monaco has been acting for a long time to protect forest and plant biodiversity at global scale. This commitment starts from its own territory covered with numerous public gardens that hold monumental plants from the four continents forming a Parcours des Arbres Patrimoniaux (Monaco Heritage Trees Course) since 2013. But the attention to urban forestry goes beyond by the will of the Mairie de Monaco (Monaco City Hall) and the French Office National des Forêts - O.N.F. (National Forestry Office), the Governmental body in charge of public forests, under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and the Ministry of Ecological and Inclusive Transition.
The 2024 marks the 15th anniversary of a unique environmental Initiative named « 1 naissance = 1 arbre » («1 birth = 1 tree») aimed at planting a tree for each human birth set in Monaco region, including the neighbouring municipalities, notably: Cap d'Ail, La Turbie, Roquebrune, etc.
A tribute cremony to celebrate the place that started the initiative was held at La Turbie Racing Club on Saturday 22nd June 2024 in the presence of Marjorie Crovetto, Deputy Mayor, in charge of the Living Environment, Environment and Sustainable Development, Jean-Jacques Raffaelle, Mayor of La Turbie, and Fabrice Manzoni, Deputy Head of Roya Eastern Territorial Unit for the National Forestry Office. A meaningful delegation of children born fifteen yeas ago, at the time of the first trees plantation, joined the event.
The project «1 birth = 1 tree» was originally developed within the global campaign "Planting for the Planet" (Plantons pour la Planète), founded by Felix Finkbeiner and sponsored by H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco aimed at planting one billion trees, worlwide. Started in 2007 by the smart nine-year-old German boy, the awareness campaign, addressed to enhance the prior role of trees in absorbing CO2 emisions, became a smash success involving more than 190 Countries with more than 275 projects. As for the Principality, this years' target is to plant 804 trees.
On that occasion, Marjorie Crovetto pointed out: « Every year nearly 1,000 trees are planted, which corresponds to the number of births registered in Monaco by the Service de l’État Civil - Nationalité (Civil Registry Office - Nationality). This year, the total number of trees, which has been planted since 2018, exceeds 14,000 units ». ***
