Monaco moves towards carbon neutrality by cutting down greenhouse gas emissions.

Updated: Oct 22

The Principality of Monaco is heading for the carbon neutrality by 2050, reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 55% (compared with 1990) by 2030. These ambitious goals were clearly confirmed in the Pacte National pour la Transition Energétique - PNTE

(The National Energy Transition Pact) aimed at making companies, institutions and individuals contribute to achieve effective targets. The situation is constantly monitored and the state of the art is periodically disseminated to the general public. The Governmental Directorate on Environment has just published the 2024 National GHG Emissions Inventory Report (updated to 2022 data) within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which highlights a significant contribution to the global cause regarding the Monegasque territory.

In 2022, the total amount of the Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emissions were 66.53 kt CO2eq, marking a 34.5% decrease, compared to 1990 levels. This significant reduction is the result of several factors, including the decline in fuel consumption in the transportation and building sectors (considered among the most polluting), as well as an increase in the use of biofuels.

The Principality of Monaco progressed in the use of renewables for 65.5% of the energy consumed in the Country (data referring to 2022). And the trend gradually increases. Renewable energy sources have been used for some years in Monaco up to 43% of the total, including hydropower.

The Plan Climat Air Energie (Climate Air Energy Plan) by the Gouvernement Princier (Prince's Government) is addressed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% in 2030, compared with 1990, as planned in the PNTE. All that comes from a targeted climate change action plan to encourage nature-based solutions, urban regenaration and climate mitigation.

The Environment Directorate is strongly committed to push advancement in a Low-Carbon Strategy as a driver to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, taking into account the new challenges arising from extreme atmospheric phenomena.***
